Professional Development Placement Opportunity: Youth Facilitator – CE Scheme

Galway Community Circus is looking for a young and enthusiastic person interested in youth work and facilitation to join our team as Youth Facilitator. The successful candidate will work with the team and the young members of Galway Community Circus on our Youth Forum/Collective to ensure the active voice of youth in the Circus’s programme, policy and project development.

This is a very exciting time for youth-led development and this role offers a unique opportunity to be involved in our Youth Forum/Collective from concept to creation. Ensuring the active voice of youth benefits our communities and the youth involved and affected.

CE Scheme

Eligibility to participate on CE is generally linked to those who are 21 years or over and in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for 1 year or more or 18 years and over for certain disadvantaged groups. Your eligibility will have to be verified by the Department. You can confirm this at your local Intreo Centre.

Galway Community Circus is Ireland’s flagship organisation for youth and social circus, located in the heart of Galway City with a local, national and international remit. Our aim is to advance the artistic, personal and social development of young people through circus arts. We are committed to creating an innovative and imaginative learning experience where all young people can realise their full potential. Through our ground-breaking programmes and high-quality productions, Galway Community Circus has proven itself to be a cradle of artistic excellence and educational innovation in Ireland, working with over 600 young people from diverse backgrounds every week.

We are a strategically funded organisation with the Arts Council of Ireland under their Children, Young People and Education department. Our staff is highly diverse with nine nationalities in a team of 20 employees, tutors and full-time volunteers.

The function of the Youth Facilitator will be:

  • To empower young people
  • To develop relevant learning opportunities
  • To accompany young people in their intercultural learning process
  • To contribute to organisational and youth policy development
  • To use evaluative practice.

The Youth Facilitator will (with the mentorship of the team):

  • Enable young people to participate through developing collective action and learning
  • Enable young people in planning, delivery and evaluation of activities
  • Enable young people to work towards their goals
  • Help the development of the confidence, knowledge, critical thinking, skills and understanding of young people
  • Get in touch with young people on an emotional level
  • Widen their awareness of the concepts of power and change
  • Provide young people with appropriate guidance and feedback
  • Take advantage of spontaneous learning and development opportunities in everyday situations
  • Identify any special learning needs
  • Stimulate the creativity of young people
  • Promote active tolerance and interaction with people from other cultures at home and abroad
  • Work creatively with conflict towards peaceful solutions
  • Assist young people to define their place in a changing world.

Desirable Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • An understanding of safeguarding and child protection legislation and practice
  • Understanding of confidentiality as it pertains to vulnerable young people
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting young people’s lives
  • Experience of working face to face with young people
  • Ability to organise programmed youth activities
  • Able to develop effective working relationships with young people and adults in a variety of settings
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • IT skills
  • The ability to communicate with a wide range of people including young people, staff and volunteers
